FOCUS Multi-drug Resistant Organism Screening

Infections caused by bacterial organisms resistant to most available antibiotics are called multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs), and have been on the increase over the last decade worldwide, and in Ireland. The most frequently found MDROs seen in hospitalised patients include: vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) and multi-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (i.e. Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE)/Extended Spectrum β-Lactamases (ESBL)).
