Testing for Stool Calprotectin Now Performed Onsite at Biomnis

Sidebar Image

We are pleased to announce that we have commenced performing stool calprotectin testing here in Dublin. This launch continues our local investment strategy and makes us the first laboratory to offer this test onsite in the country.

This test is useful for distinguishing between organic (inflammatory) bowel disease and functional bowel disorders (irritable bowel syndrome).

IBD V IBS

Aside from negatively impacting the quality of life, IBS is relatively benign and is not classed as a disease. It is a group of symptoms that occur due to physical and/or psychological causes. Recommended treatment is usually a change to diet and lifestyle.

IBD on the other hand is an organic disease characterised by intestinal inflammation or ulcerations which can lead to serious complications including the development of fistulas, abscesses and strictures. This disease also carries an increased risk of malignancy. Diagnosing IBD typically involves expensive and invasive endoscopy and medical imaging.

TEST INFORMATION

Method: The Calprotectin test is performed on the Phadia 250 instrument, using the Phadia EliA method.

Reference Range: The reference range remains unchanged from our previous referred test:

  • <50 ug/g:            Negative
  • 50 - 200 ug/g:     Gray Zone: repeat in 4 to 6 weeks.
  • >200 ug/g:          Positive

Turnaround Time:  2 weeks

Sample Requirements:  The required sample is at least 20g stool, refrigerated. Calprotectin is stable for several days at ambient temperatures but refrigeration may be preferred due to the nature of the sample. NB: Please do not freeze samples because freezing may lead to falsely elevated results by the Phadia method.
