wineThe authenticity of our food and drink is an ever-present issue, with more and more fraudulent products entering the supply chain every day. In February 2016 Italian authorities seized bottles, labels and boxes relating to counterfeit samples of a well-known, luxury brand of champagne which had an estimated market value of €1.8m. Other similar cases of wine forgery have also been covered in recent press articles including one that was the subject of a television documentary involving fake bottles of Burgundy wine in the USA.

WineWine authenticity testing in Eurofins can trace itself right back to the very start of the business 30 years ago when CEO Gilles Martin purchased the rights to SNIF-NMR® technology from the University of Nantes following research and development into the capability of this process by his parents, who were both professors at the University. This method has subsequently been developed by Eurofins to check the authenticity of wines, spirits, fruit juice, honey, sugar and vinegar.

Today, Eurofins provides a comprehensive authenticity and quality control screening test by way of the Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Profiling (¹H-NMR) Wine Screener. Using a unique fingerprint to analyse against a catalogue of authentic samples, this test can confirm grape variety and origin, detect if there has been any adulteration and with certain white wines even confirm the year of vintage.
